The Best Pizza on a Boat
Our galley isn’t fancy or very big. And while we’ve updated a few things, we still have the original MagicChef stove (in fabulous 1970s’ yellow!). So when we moved aboard, I wasn’t sure what to expect but it turns out our little stove is fabulous! And it makes the best pizza, not just on a boat, but anywhere!!
Making Pizza on a Boat
It all starts with the crust. And I love a deep dish pizza crust. My deep-dish pizza crust is chewy, crunchy, thick and oh so easy. In fact, the longer it rests, the better it tastes. So feel free to make it in the morning, leave it in the fridge and enjoy a yummy pizza dinner.
One thing to remember, this pizza crust needs a hot, hot, hot pre-heated oven. So wait for your oven to get to 500Β°F before putting your pie in the oven.
Saucy Seconds
Next is the sauce. I used to make my own sauce.
But I only have so much room in my freezer for the leftovers and it turns out we like the store-bought Primo sauce just fine. It keeps in the fridge and makes impromptu pizza nights a regular thing.
I’ve included my recipe – it really is quite good. And once in a while, if I’m feeling especially fancy (or I forgot we were out of sauce) I still make it.
Say Cheese!!
Cheese is probably the second most important component to a great pizza (after the crust). When I started making pizza, I shredded mozzarella – a job I just don’t like doing.
After trying a recipe for a Detroit style pizza where they cubed the mozzarella cheese, I quickly jumped on that method. Much easier and less messy.
But then one day, we had a pizza craving. After prepping the crust, I discovered we were actually out of mozzarella! It was raining, it was cold and neither of us really wanted to leave the cozy boat.
What we did have though, was cheese curds.
And that folks, is when we discovered our favourite way to make a pizza. They melt perfectly and their flavour and texture just suits all the pizzas we love.
Simply cut/break them into small cubes and add them to your pizza alongside your favourite toppings.
Top-Notch Toppings
Which brings us to toppings. We enjoy the standard pizzas like pepperoni and Hawaiian. We also love anchovies or adding leftover pulled pork with some BBQ sauce. Really, there isn’t much we won’t put on a pizza.
But our three favourite pizzas and the ones we make most often are Smoked Oyster, Bacon and Spinach, Mediterranean and Shrimp Scampi.
