A savoury oatmeal may not sound like the oatmeal you’re used to, but hear me out. Like a lot of people, when I think about oatmeal, sweet and fruity breakfasts come to mind. But I’m really more a savoury breakfast kind of girl.
I love my hummus and jalapeño toast, sometimes with avocado, sometimes with tomato, sometimes plain but always with Everything But The Bagel seasoning!
So the other morning, when we were out of jalapeño buns for toast and I had a perfect avocado waiting for me, I knew I needed savoury and spicy breakfast. That is how Everything But The Bagel Jalapeño Oatmeal was born.
Finding Everything But The Bagel Seasoning
If you’re like me and the pandemic is keeping you away from Trader Joe’s or there isn’t one in your neighbourhood, I’m now using one I found on Amazon. It tastes just as good as the Trader Joe’s version and I don’t run afoul of border patrol agents.
Making Savoury Oatmeal on a Boat
I used my usual recipe for Instant Pot steel cut oats but eliminated all the sweet elements – cinnamon, vanilla, etc. In their place, I added a diced jalapeño, salt and pepper.
Once the oats were ready, I stirred in some regular hummus to make them super creamy and give me that hummus flavour I crave. Then the final step was to top my bowlful of savoury goodness with that perfect avocado and some Everything But The Bagel seasoning.
There was just a hint of heat from the jalapeño and with the hummus, the oats were almost like risotto. It was heaven in a bowl – so savoury, spicy and exactly what I wanted.
Plus, I had leftovers to look forward to the next day along with another perfect avocado!
As made, this oatmeal is vegan. But it’s also the perfect base to add a poached egg or other veggies or proteins.
Boat Tested and Tasted!
This Savoury Everything But The Bagel Jalapeño Oatmeal was boat tested and tasted on a 1978 Tollycraft 37 Sedan using an Instant Pot 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker – 6 Qt. See other boat tested and tasted recipes.
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 cup unsweetened oat milk, or your favourite or more water
- 1 jalapeno, diced and seeds removed
- 1 cup steel cut oats
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp ground pepper
- 3 tbsp your favourite hummus
- Toppings: avocado, poached egg, roasted veggies, etc.
- 1-2 tsp Everything But The Bagel Seasoning, to taste
Add the water, milk (if using), steel cut oats (do not use any other kind of oats), jalapeño, salt and pepper to your Instant Pot and stir.
Place lid on pressure cooker and set the vent to sealed. Cook on HIGH pressure for 3 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes.
Stir hummus into the oats, which may seem runny at first, but they will set-up as you stir in the hummus and they cool a bit.
Spoon into your favourite bowl and top with avocado or toppings of choice. Don't forget the Everything But the Bagel seasoning.
You can easily double this recipe if you'd like more than two servings. Simply increase the cooking time to 4 minutes.
